~ U.S. Virgin Islands Hosts Successful In-market Reception Event in Washington, D.C. ~

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands, July 2, 2008 - America's Caribbean brought the islands to Washington, D.C. from June 21 to 26, during the Caribbean Tourism Organization's first Annual Caribbean Tourism Summit (ACTS). The U.S. Virgin Islands positioned itself as front-and-center among the more than 30 countries of the Caribbean that participated in the week-long events, through active participation in industry meetings to discuss important issues affecting the region and by hosting an exclusive U.S. Virgin Islands media and travel agent reception on June 26 at The Park at 14th.
More than 80 high-profile media and travel agents attended the reception, from such reputable, top-tier publications as USA Today, The Washington Post, National Geographic Magazine, AARP, Body & Soul Magazine and The Washingtonian, with broadcast from Voice of America Radio Network and Associated Press Broadcast, among others. Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty provided the opening remarks and featured the USVI's St. Croix "Your Port of Solace" DVD. Additionally, key representatives from the destination spoke about the islands' new tourism initiatives, namely Director of Sales Loan Sewer, Randall Doty of Wyndham Sugar Bay and Paul Graber of Bolongo Bay Beach Resort, Secret Harbour Beach Resort and The Buccaneer. Some Virgin Islanders living in or visiting the DC area, such as Jennifer Nugent Hill, Tanya Hill, Tina Comissiong, Ellington Robinson, Ruby Simmonds-Esannason, Rubio Esannason, along with Bryan and Lisa Williams also attended the event and were able to chat with agents about the USVI.

Located in the urban, downtown district of Washington D.C., The Park at 14th provided the exclusivity and trend-setting ambiance that the USVI was looking for, similarly to the approach taken with the destination's innovative, new marketing collateral. To add even more local flair to the event was The Park at 14th General Manager Sherwin Robinson, originally from St. Croix, who was on-hand throughout the evening to greet guests and reunite with local Virgin Islanders. Cruzan Rum cocktails and Caribbean inspired-cuisine were served, while the sounds of a Caribbean steel-pan band filled the space. Guests mingled with representatives from the destination and had the opportunity to learn of the many attributes that make the U.S. Virgin Islands one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean. As a takeaway, guests received a gift bag chock-full of destination materials, including a Destination DVD, CD press kit, visitor's guide, USVI-branded t-shirt and a mini bottle of Cruzan Rum.

"Washington, D.C. is a key consumer travel market for the U.S. Virgin Islands," stated Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty. "Our initiatives in this city round out a series of successful in-market events designed to promote consumer and media awareness and to drive potential visitors to the destination."

The Department of Tourism also secured booth space at the ACTS' Exposition Pavilion, where Caribbean Tourism executives and influencers were given the opportunity to learn more about the USVI. Additionally, representatives from the destination participated in a Gala Awards Dinner and a Rum and Rhythm Celebration, both of which provided notable promotional opportunities to spread tourism messaging and position itself as a favorite Caribbean destination among others.

~ Travelers are reminded that travel to America's Caribbean is as easy as ever ~

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands, May 22, 2008 - As the State Department begins to produce new passport cards, travelers are reminded that no passport is required to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands. The cards are being issued by the State Department as an alternative to the traditional passport books in an effort to simplify travel for U.S. citizens since more rigid travel requirements have come into effect with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
"The new passport cards have caused a bit of confusion in regards to what is required of U.S. citizens when traveling to America's Caribbean," says Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty. "The cards are meant to be a simple and convenient alternative to the larger passport books, but they are not required for travel to the Territory. U.S. citizens do not need a passport of any kind when visiting St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas from Puerto Rico and the mainland U.S."

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative passed by U.S. Congress requires that travelers, including U.S. citizens who travel via air to and from the Americas, the Caribbean and Bermuda must travel with a passport in order to enter or re-enter the United States. Being that the U.S. Virgin Islands is a United States Territory, American citizens traveling to or from the St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas are considered not to have left the U.S., and thus do not need to present a passport.

For information about the new passport cards, visit http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html. Additional information can be found on the State Department's travel website, www.travel.state.gov, or by calling the U.S. National Passport Information Center: 1-877-4USA-PPT; TDD/TTY: 1-888-874-7793.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, May 8, 2008 - In observance of National Tourism Week in the U.S. Virgin Islands May 9 -17, the Department of Tourism (DOT) has planned numerous activities throughout the territory aimed at building awareness of the impact of tourism on the local economy.
"Tourism plays a pivotal role in the lives of our community," said Beverly Nicholson-Doty, Commissioner of Tourism. "This annual event promotes wider understanding of travel and tourism as an industry that contributes immensely to our economic and social well being."

A series of events have been planned around the territory beginning with the launch of a public service announcement campaign on radio stations and in newspapers throughout the territory. The announcements which carry the slogan "Tourism is me...Tourism: It's all of US." convey the message that all Virgin Islanders are connected to the business of tourism. The announcements will continue throughout the year.

On May 9th Tourism Week kicks off on St. Thomas where DOT staff will participate in the USVI Hotel & Tourism Association's (USVI HTA) Career Fair to showcase the variety of jobs available in the tourism industry. Additionally, St. John and St. Thomas will play host to a number of other activities. All week long, tourism-related trivia will be featured on WSTA Radio's "Morning Show with Addie Ottley" (1340-AM). On May 13th tourism industry professionals will visit local schools to speak to hundreds of students on the importance of tourism to the local economy and the tourism job market. DOT employees and students will "Greet a Tourist" on May 14th in downtown Charlotte Amalie and Cruz Bay to welcome visitors, provide information and hand out Tourism Week souvenirs. On May 16th a group of junior high school students on St. Thomas and St. John will learn about tourism careers, tour hotels, attractions and other businesses. At each site they will have the chance to speak to tourism professionals and get a behind-the-scenes look at the industry. Activities will conclude with a "Tourism Awareness Fair" at Tutu Park Mall. A DOT booth will display videos, ads, newsletters and other USVI tourism materials.

On St. Croix, the DOT will host the "Historical Walk & Talk", a historical walking tour of Frederiksted on May 10th and Christiansted on May 17th. The tours will be led by Wayne James. Radio listeners can tune into a tourism trivia contest throughout the week on WJKC Isle 95 (95.1-FM). Students on St. Croix can learn more about tourism careers at a Career Fair to be held at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix campus in the Great Hall on May 14th. Organized by the DOT in conjunction with the USVI HTA, the career fair will give students the opportunity to meet with tourism professionals, business owners, restaurateurs, and government officials to learn about entrepreneurship and different careers in the tourism industry. Among the exhibitors are members of the USVI HTA, St. Croix Chamber of Commerce and the Virgin Islands Department of Labor. DOT staff will also be on hand to introduce the destinations' new marketing materials, including the new promotional DVD to students. Tourism Week activities will also jumpstart the weekend when the DOT hosts Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted on May 16th with giveaways, including a trip to St. Thomas.

Stateside, National Tourism Week is a collective effort to promote travel through customized events in communities throughout the U.S. National Tourism Week was established in 1983 by a joint resolution of Congress. In 1984, President Regan signed a Presidential Proclamation urging citizens to observe the week.
