USVI Hotel & Tourism Association Lauds Hospitality Employees With Tommy Star Awards

U.S. Virgin Islands, November 20, 2007 Hospitality employees were honored recently with prestigious Tommy Star Awards for their outstanding contributions to the industry. This is the 6th year that the Hotel & Tourism Association has hosted the awards gala to recognize “stars” for their excellence and dedication.

“It is imperative to the success of our industry to publicly thank our employees who exceed expectations and provide the best visitor experience possible, said marketing manager Canika George John. While only nine winners were chosen, all the nominees exemplify the quality of people employed by our businesses and are great mentors for their colleagues and our young ambassadors.”

The winners were chosen based on an extensive selection exercise. Nominees submitted a short biographical paragraph, letters of recommendation, and information on any previous awards won. Esteemed judges conducted interviews and selected the winners based on their responses and the other information submitted.

The 2007 Tommy Star winners are: Kisa Harris of the Department of Tourism, public service associate of the year; Cheryl Cornelius of American Airlines, airline associate of the year; Eva Maldonado of Yacht Haven’s Grand Cru, restaurant associate of the year; Vernon Araujo of Diamonds International, retail associate of the year; Ames Joseph of Joseph Taxi & Tours, taxi operator of the year; Toya Frazier Ellis of the Westin St. John, hotel supervisor of the year; Patrick Hermon of The Ritz Carlton, hotel associate of the year; Sherrolyn Stapleton of Viva Villas, hospitality support service associate of the year; and Joseph Sam Halverson of Dive Experience, attractions and activities associate of the year. All winners receive boxed Lalique crystal starfish compliments of Little Switzerland.

The Lifetime Achievement award was bestowed on a hospitality legend and community supporter, Nick Pourzal. His more than 30 years of dedication to Frenchman’s Reef and continued service to the Hotel & Tourism Association and the people of the Virgin Islands helped earn Pourzal this coveted award.
