The University of the Virgin Islands has been designated as an Authorized Training Center by the American Heart Association (AHA), the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Through the UVICELL Center, the university will provide emergency life support courses to meet the needs of healthcare providers and the general public.
The UVICELL Center will support the mission of AHA’s Cardiovascular Care Program to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in every community. As part of the partnership, UVICELL will serve as an authorized provider of lifesaving skills courses to include Basic Life Support (BLS) courses in Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and Infant CPR. Programs will be delivered according to AHA guidelines for initial and re-certification emergency training.
“We’re delighted to be able to offer these lifesaving courses to individuals, educators and healthcare providers across the territory,” said Ilene Garner, Director of the UVICELL Center. “With the development of the UVI medical school on the horizon, the University will be poised to administer these courses to support this initiative.”
